New lens

I received my new lens yesterday, a 50mm f/1.8 (Nikon) which I awaited impatiently! I tried some pictures right away... and it actually is not very easy! It doesn't have autofocus, so basically I suddenly have to be a "real" photographer!! Today I show you my first two portraits (out of 10 pictures, but the others were completely out of focus), these two are far from perfect, but the best ones. PLEASE give me your honest opinion and if possible some advice :-) Thanks!

lens: 50mm f/1.8
aperture: 2 (-ish)
shutterspeed auto
flash!

It's a little difficult, because the photos are so little. But I think they are underexposed. Could you set your ISO higher? They'll have more grain, but grain is way better than blur in low light. Your 1.8 is great for low light, but can only go so far. Try again with the same settings and ISO at at least 800 and see how that looks.

Good job for manual focus. This lens had a long learning curve for me.

I am not the person to give technical tips - but lucky you for getting a new lens. I am yearning for a new one.

It sure is hard to tackle a non- AF lens. I love doing MF with my 85mm sometimes...but not with my kids. LOL...they would never sit still long enough for that for SURE...but WOW...you are so brave.

Oye! No auto focus?! I wouldn't have bought it...LOL Are you sure it doesn't have a switch?

Oh it is tough to do manual focus but it looks like you are off to a good start, they do look a little under exposed..

Enjoy that new lens. Could be your aperture was too wide or SS too slow.

good try! I can't comment on the quality because I don't have enough experience but I am envious that you got your lens! lucky you! good luck with your practicing!

I'm too new to give advice, but I will say good luck! =)

I think they are great practice shots. I just ordered mine and it should be here tomorrow!! :). What camera do you have that it doesn't auto focus? Anyway, I love the depth of field! Keep practicing!
